Obituary

The Weekly Recorder (Fayetteville, NY) - Thursday, September 21, 1882 - Page 3, Column 3.

MRS. LEVI SNELL A gloom was cast over our community last Sabbath by the announcement of the death of Mrs. Levi Snell. Though poor in health for some years, and latterly prostrated by disease, some hopes of her recovery was entertained even so late as the week preceding her death. Sunday morning, however, it became evident to the anxious friends who ministered her bedside that the end was approaching. At about 11 o'clock she passed quietly away, after having given those about her an affectionate farewell.

Mrs. Snell was born in Montgomery County, October 28, 1818. She was married November 18, 1835. With her husband she removed to the town of Manlius in the year 1846, where she lived a portion of the time on the farm now owned by Peter Smith about a mile north of this village, for twelve years on the place now owned and occupied by Marquis Peck, and for sixteen years at her late residence in this village.

During nearly one-half of her life, she was a professing Christian and united with the Fayetteville Baptist church 33 years ago, of which she was an earnest and active member to the day of her death.

Mrs. Snell was so widely known that it seems almost unnecessary to speak of her character. She was a woman of high social and moral worth, respected and loved by all who knew her. As a neighbor she was ready with words of hope and comfort in the hour of affliction, and cheerfully gave such aid as she could render in the time of trouble. She had a good word for everyone, and those who visited her were assured of a friendly welcome. The young found pleasure in her society, as well as the old, and those who sought her advice received the best of counsel kindly given. She was particularly interested in the poor, and in a quiet and unostentatious manner, gave practical demonstration of her sympathy. She was interested in every good cause and ready to aid in its advancement. As a Christian and a member of the church of Christ it was impossible to speak of her too highly. Her convictions were strong and abiding. She acted from principle. There was nothing fitful or spasmodic about her religious life. Hers was a constant service. She was regular and practical in her attendance upon religious services, making everything else subservient to the one great desire and object of her life, to be accounted faithful. She had before her constantly "The mark for the prize of her high calling in Christ Jesus." Her daily life was a vindication of her earnest piety, and her influence was potent because of her fidelity.

Her death was a fitting close to a useful and devoted life. It was peaceful and triumphant. "Death was swallowed up in victory" for she could say as she stood on the very border of the grave, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge shall give me in that day. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for Thou art with me. Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me."
