Biography

Benjamin Luther Crowder was born 15 Feb 1863 in Virginia. He was the son of Jane Shirley Crush and James Madison Crowder. His older siblings included Wm McD, Mary S, Harriet H, Milton, Henry, Eliza, Edward, and Rufus.

1870s

In 1870, Benjamin Crowder (7) lived in Fincastle Township, Botetourt County, Virginia with his father James (53), mother Jane S, and older siblings Harriet (19). Eliza J (16), Rufus H (13), Sarah C (10). James was a farmer. [1]

His mother Jane Crowder died.

1880s

In 1880, Benjamin Crowder (17) lived in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, with his father James M (72), sisters Mary S (32) and Herriet H (31), and brother Rufus W (22). James continued working as a farmer and Benjamin and his brother Rufus worked on a farm. [2]

In Jan 1889 in Botetourt County, Benjamin Crowder married Eddie Kate Dowdy. Eddie Kate was the daughter of Malinda (Damewood) Dogan and the late James Dowdy; she was a stepdaughter of John Dogan. [3] [4]

In Oct 1889, Ben and Kate had their first child, a daughter Gussie Crowder, born in Catawba, Botetourt County. [5]

1890s

In Aug 1891, daughter Cary Woodville Crowder was born.

In Sep 1894, his daughter French M Crowder was born in Catawba. [6]

In Feb 1897 son June Benjamin Crowder was born.

1900s

In 1900, Benjamin Crowder (47) and his wife Kate (31) lived in Amsterdam with their daughters Gussie (11), Carry (9), French (6), and son June (3). Kate had a fifth child but that child was not alive for the 1900 census. Benjamin continued work as a farmer. [7]

In Apr 1904 their son Percy Victor Crowder was born. In Oct 1905 their daughter Hazel Vivian Crowder was born. In May 1908 son Russell Gale Crowder was born.

1910s

In 1910, Ben L Crowder (47) and Kate (41) lived in Amsterdam with seven children Gussie (20), Carry (18), Frank (15), Janie (13), Percy (6), Hazel (4), Russell (2), and a boarder Fountain Coldwell (31). [8] Kate had given birth to eight children although seven of them were living. Ben was still a farmer.

In Feb 1912, their daughter Cary Crowder married Elbert Dickerson. [9]

On 5 Jun 1918, his daughter Gussie L Crowder (28) married Robert Edward Young (30) in Scioto County, Ohio. Robert was single, worked as a machinist, lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had been born in Fincastle, Virginia, and was the son of C C and Judith Spangler Young. Gussie was single, worked as a stenographer, lived at Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. She had been born in Fincastle, Virginia, and the daughter of B L and E Kate Dowdy Crowder. They were married by minister Rev C Lloyd Strecker.

Their daughter French Crowder married Dayton Taylor.

1920s

In 1920, Bennie Crowder (56) and Ettie K (51) lived in Fincastle with four children Junie (22), Percie (15), Hazel (13), Russel (11), and his sister Harriet H Lugar (75). Ben was a farmer employer on a general farm. Junie's occupation was working out as a farm laborer and Percie was a laborer on the home farm. [10]

In Sep 1924, Ben's wife Eddie Kate Crowder died. She was buried in Godwin Cemetery, Fincastle.

His son Percy Crowder married Isabel Dillon.

His daughter Hazel married Max Spigle.

His son June Crowder married Bert.

1930s

In 1930, Ben L Crowder (67) was widowed and living alone in Fincastle. He did odd jobs as a teamster. [11]

1940s

In 1940, Ben Crowder (77) was still living alone in Fincastle. He was retired. [12]

On 5 Dec 1942, Benjamin Crowder died. He was buried in Godwin Cemetery where his wife had been buried. [13]
