Matthew was born in about 1830.
Matthew emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland. He was married to Julia Donovan. They were married in Auckland in 1860.
In the Jury list of 1860-1861, there is a Matthew Cullen listed, with the occupation of shoemaker and at West Queen Street. Whether this is the same Matthew Cullen is uncertain. (JURY L1ST FOR 1860-61, Daily Southern Cross, Volume XVII, Issue 1294, 7 February 1860) Coincidentally a Richard Donovan (relative of his wife?) was also on the jury list as a shoemaker in Queen Street.
There were several children registered as born in Auckland to parents Matthew and Julia Cullen. These were:-

Matthew Cullen passed away in 1892. He died at his residence, which was Victoria Hotel, in Onehunga - he was 61 years of age. Matthew was buried at Onehunga Catholic Cemetery (Our Lady of the Assumption Onehunga).
Matthew signed a will with his mark on Christmas Day 1891, a month before his death. It named his wife Julia as his sole beneficiary and executor, but probate was not applied for until 1909, several years after his death, because the property was not of sufficient value to make the cost of application worthwhile. The will was then mislaid for several years. One of the witnesses to his will was William John Mooney, of Onehunga, and the other was Sir George Maurice O'Rorke. Sir George stated in his affidavit that Matthew had dictated the will to him. The value of the estate, as at 1909, was said to have been under a hundred pounds.
