William Curtayne came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
William was born in 1818 in Kilmallock, County Limerick.[1] He was also known as William McCurtayne.
William emigrated with his future wife Ellen and her family from Liverpool on 27 October 1841 on the 'Champion.[2][3][4][5]' After a voyage of 108 days William arrived at Sydney on 12 February 1842 with his future wife Ellen and her family. During the voyage 5 sailors committed mutiny but were eventually released by the Attorney General.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
He married Ellen Holmes, daughter of William Hyde Holmes and Ellen O'Donnell, circa 1842 in New South Wales. However, this is open to some speculation as there may be another husband and wife of the same names.[12][13] James provided information on the death of William Hyde Holmes, on 1 July 1864, in Sydney. The cause of death was stated as old age.[14][15][16][17] James and William provided information on the death of his mother-in-law Ellen O'Donnell, on 11 January 1865, in Sydney. The cause of death was listed as vomiting of six weeks duration.[18][19]
