He was the father of Australian Prime Minister John Curtin.
John Curtin Snr was born in Kilpadder, Kilshannig, Co Cork in 1853, the son of John Curtin and Mary Hanlon. After service with the Btirish Army in India, he followed his brother to Australia in 1880, securing a position with the Victorian Police Service (1881-90) stationed mostly at Creswick. His health deterioriated and he leftthe service, managing a series of hotels in Dromana, Charlton, Macedon and elsewhere during the severe economic downturn of the 1890s. The family eventually settled, in poverty, at Brunswick.
