William was born around 1814 in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, this is estimated based n his age at death and census information. His mother was named Ann Graham and was born around 1783 in Irvine which is estimated based on the 1871 census entry, her surname of Graham was taken from the death index.

William was said to have married a Janet McFarlane (~1811 - ) however no record of the marriage has been found.

In the 1841 census William (age 35), S Cale Prin, was in Renton Red Wst, Cardross, Dunbartonshire.^[1]

In the 1851 census Wm (age 35), Calico Printer, was the lodger of Isabella Wilson in Barrhead, Neilston, Renfrewshire.^[2] He was living away from his family at the time of this census.

In the 1871 census William (age 55), Calico Printer, was in Random St Burn's Land, Bonhill, Dumbartonshire.^[3] His mother Ann is living with him and his family.

In the 1881 census William (age 66), Labourer (Printfield, was at 11 Random Street, Bonhill, Dumbartonshire.^[4] William and his wife Janet have their daughter Janet and her children living with him.

William died in 1882 at Bonhill, Dunbartonshire at the age of 68 years^[5].
