Biography

Katarzyna was born on 10 Feb 1842 [1]. Katarzyna was a widow when she married Karol Grabowski in about 1912. Her former husband's family name was Piwowarczyk, first name unknown, and there are no children from that marriage mentioned in her inheritance case file[2]. She passed away on 29 October 1913 and left some property, land and posessions to Karol Grabowski on her death. Her sister Magdalena (married name Rysiewicz) was also a beneficiary on her death [2].

Research Notes

Name: Katarzyna Czekajska is identified as the deceased former wife of Karol Grabowski in the record of his marriage to Brigida Galos [3] Date of Birth: Katarzyna's date of birth was found through the Geneteka Database [1], based on her age found in her inheritance case file [2].

Inheritance case file: The Imperial-Royal National Court in Krakow was created as a first instance tribunal for the City of Krakow and its district in 1855. For the rest of the County, cases such as inheritances were dealt with by district offices and, after 1868, by District Courts [4]. The District Court servicing Czernichów and Kłokoczyn was based in Liszki (C.K. Sąd Powiatowy w Liszkach), a town around 12 km north-east of Kłokoczyn. Various historical files from the District Courts were transferred to the National Archives in Kraków, and some, but not all, are indexed online. I came across the following entry, archive reference 29/1027/0/2/1560, while searching the indexes:

  • Akta sprawy spadkowej: Katarzyna z Czekajskich Grabowska, zam. Kłokoczyn, zm. 29 X 1913 r. Spadkobiercy: Karol Grabowski
  • Translation - Inheritance case files: Katarzyna Grabowska, née Czekajska, residing in Kłokoczyn, died on October 29, 1913 Heirs: Karol Grabowski

The retrieved case file provides detailed evidence of the settlement of Katarzyna's inheritance between her second husband Karol Grabowski and her surviving sister Magdalena née Czekajska Rysiewicz, the details of which strongly support the recollections of Edward Grabowski regarding his father's inheritance of property and land in around 1914. It reveals the family name of Katarzyna, and that of her first husband, neither of which Edward knew.
