Biography

Matteo was born in 1893. Matteo D'Errico, Sr. and his wife, Isabella, entered the US on 29 Apr 1920. They arrived in New York, aboard the ship "Belvedere", traveling from Naples, Italy. The ship's list recorded that they both had last been living in San Severo, Italy. This ship's list was a veritable wealth of information, also giving the names of both of their fathers: Giulio D'Errico and Andreas Pierino.

They lived in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts during the time of the taking of the 1930 US Census. They rented a home at No. 113 on the Boston Turnpike for $19.00 per month. By this time, Matteo had learned to speak English; but, his wife had not. When I married Robert Joseph D'Errico, I met Isabella; and, in 1975 she still was having a hard time with the English language. Matteo was working as a blacksmith for the City of Shrewsbury. Both of his parents were born in Italy, according to the census record.

Matteo's World War II Draft Card showed that he then owned his own business at 305 Plantation Street in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He and Isabella were then living at 101 Turnpike Road in Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury was also given as the place of last residence in the Social Security Death Index at the time of his death in 1972.

The 1938 Shrewsbury City Directory lists the D'Errico family as living at 101 Boston Turnpike Road and operating the D'Errico Market at 99 Boston Turnpike Road. The 1941 Shrewsbury Directory continues to list the same information with the addition of Julio D'Errico listed as a clerk at the market. The 1954 Shrewsbury City Directory lists the same information with the addition of "Lillian M." as the wife of Julio; their home being located at 103 Boston Turnpike Road. By this time, Matteo and Isabel are living at 32 Dewey Road.

Both Matteo and Isabella returned for a visit to Italy in the year 1953. They returned from Naples aboard the ship "Saturnia" on 27 Jul 1953, landing in New York. [1]
