AN APPEAL.
To the Editor of "The Mercury."
Sir,-I desire to bring before your readers more especially those who may have known James Dabner on the different mining fields of the State the circumstances connected with the unfortunate death of this miner. He worked on this mine for five months, and left 17 months ago to take on hunting and open air work near his home at Royal George, Avoca, but the disease he had contracted during his mining career could not be shaken off, and, after a lingering illness of 12 months, he died three weeks ago of miners phthisis. He has left a widow and 14 children, the eldest being 17 and the youngest 12 months.
With the object of assisting the widow of a hard working husband, a subscription list was opened in this office, and from 78 employees the sum of £35 10s. has resulted. More is needed, and I, as treasurer of the fund, will be glad to receive and acknowledge further contributions -
Yours, etc,
JOS. MILLER,
Manager of Story's Creek Mine, Avoca
The following year, his family placed a memorial notice in the Examiner (Launceston, Tas. : 1900 - 1954) Thu 6 Aug 1925 Page 1 Family Notices:
DABNER.--In sad and loving memory of my dear husband and our dear father, James Dabner, who passed away on August 6th, 1924.
His loving smile and kindly ways
Are pleasant to recall,
He always had a cheery word,
And died beloved by all.
And all there is to care for now
Is his photo on the wall.
'Tis sad, but true, we wonder why
The good are always first to die?
A beautitul memory left behind,
A loving husband, true and kind.
