Eliza was born around 1808, in Middlesex, England.
She was the fourth daughter of the Rt. Honourable Sir Robert Dallas, Chief Justice of the common pleas (19th of November 1813).
The Former British Colonial Dependencies, Slave Registers, 1813-1834, show that on the 28th of June 1829, Eliza had an enslaved creole girl, Nancy (19), in the Kingston parish of Jamaica. [1]
Eliza married John Machell on the 14th of November 1837, in Lancaster, St Mary, Lancashire. [2]

In the 1851 Census returns, Eliza and her husband, John, are living in the parish of St George, Hanover Square, Middlesex, with thier daughter Madeline, and a servant. [3]

At the time of the 1861 census, the family were resident in Penny Bridge Hall, Egton with Newland, Lancashire. The family were aided by seven servants. [4]

Eliza died in June 1866. Her death was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1866, in Ulverston, Lancashire. [5]
She was buried on the 9th of June 1866, in Egton-With-Newland, Lancashire. [6]
There is a memorial to her in St. Mary's Churchyard, Penny Bridge. [7]
Her memorial inscription reads:
"ELIZA the beloved wife of
John Machell
and fourth daughter of the
Rt. HON. Sir Robert Dallas
Chief Justice of the common pleas
died the 5th of June 1866"
