She was the fourth daughter of the Rt. Honourable Sir Robert Dallas, Chief Justice of the common pleas (19th of November 1813).

The Former British Colonial Dependencies, Slave Registers, 1813-1834, show that on the 28th of June 1829, Eliza had an enslaved creole girl, Nancy (19), in the Kingston parish of Jamaica. ^[1]

Eliza married John Machell on the 14th of November 1837, in Lancaster, St Mary, Lancashire. ^[2]

John and Eliza had one child:

In the 1851 Census returns, Eliza and her husband, John, are living in the parish of St George, Hanover Square, Middlesex, with thier daughter Madeline, and a servant. ^[3]

Penny Bridge Hall

Eliza died in June 1866. Her death was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1866, in Ulverston, Lancashire. ^[5]

She was buried on the 9th of June 1866, in Egton-With-Newland, Lancashire. ^[6]

There is a memorial to her in St. Mary's Churchyard, Penny Bridge. ^[7]

Her memorial inscription reads:
