Denis was born around 1831 in County Clare, in the province of Munster in the Southern part of the republic of Ireland, the son of Peter Daly (1801-1878) and Mary Higgins (1807-1865), who married sometime around 1828, possibly in County Clare, Republic of Ireland. It is not clear when, and where, Peter and Mary and their children emigrated to the Colony of Victoria, but they settled in the Town of Chewton, Shire of Golden Plains, where they both passed away.
Denis married Elizabeth Glynn on the 8 November 1858 at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis, Lonsdale Street, in the City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[1]. They had the following children, the first two born in Castlemaine, the rest born in Chewton, Colony of Victoria:--
Like his father, Peter before him, Denis settled down in the Town of Chewton, Shire of Golden Plains, after his marriage, passing away there at Albert Street, on the 16 June 1912, at the age of 81[2]. His burial took place on the 18 June 1912 in the Chewton Cemetery, Sparks Road, Town of Chewton, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. The inscription on the headstone reads:--Sacred To The Memory Of ELIZABETH The Beloved Wife of DENIS DALY, Died 25th March 1882, Aged 44 Years. ALSO The Above DENIS DALY, Died 16th June 1912, Aged 81 Years And Their Son DENIS Died 24th Dec. 1905, Aged 32 Years. Also Their Loved Daughter ELIZABETH Died 10th Jan 1930, Aged 84[3].

Another very old identity was removed on Sunday, in the person of Mr. Dennis Daly, 84 years of age, who for a great number of years resided at Golden Point. For a considerable period, the deceased was an officer of the Water Supply Department. He leaves a widow and grown up family to mourn their irreparable loss...[9].
