  • The death of Mr. Joseph Daniel at Gungal on the 11th. June caused widespread regret throughout the district, Born in the Hawkesbury River district 82 years ago, deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Daniel, "Rosehill, Muswellbrook, and went to reside at "Springfield," Gungal. at the age of three years. He had resided at Gungal up to the time of his death, which occurred following some ten months sickness. His passing removes yet another of those hardy old pioneers of the district, Which, by his labors over a lifetime, he helped to build up to what it is today. Perhaps there was no more familiar figure in the district than the late Joseph Daniel, who was respected for his generous and kindly nature, an attribute so often found in those who have battled through the pioneering days and won the hard fight against hardships encountered by the early settlers. He was never happier than when recounting experiences of the early days of the Merriwa, Gungal and Muswellbrook districts, which he knew so well and in which he was respected by all who knew him, and they were legion. He loved horses, and in his younger days a reputation as a buckjump rider and a good all-round sport. He could recall the early days when Merriwa was known by the native name of Gamman Plains, and many were the stories he told of his association with natives who roamed the district at that time. His remains were laid to rest at Muswellbrook on 12th. June, Rev. Father Fitzgerald officiating at the church and at the graveside. Deceased is survived by two sons, Ernest James Daniel, "Springfield," Gungal, and Reginald Thomas Daniel (Sydney), and two daughters, Mrs. Leo. Wicks (Merriwa) and Mrs. W. Wicks (Enfield).
