Sarah Ankers b.abt. 1856

Brick-wall Riddles:

Sarah died Oct-Nov-Dec 1871 in Salford, cited aged 71, which gives her a birthdate circa 1800 [4]. She is also cited with the following contradictory ages and places of birth;

1841 England Census - cited as 40Y, born in county Lancashire = b.cir.1800-1801 [1]
1851 England Census - cited as 47Y, born in Clifton, Lancashire = b.cir.1803-1804 [2]
1871 England Census - cited 70Y, born in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire = b.cir.1800-1801 [3]

The only record for a Sarah Darbyshire found to date born circa 1800 is;

Name: Sarah Darbyshire
Baptism Date: 15 Dec 1799
Parish: Flixton, Lancashire, England
Father's name: James Darbyshire
Mother's name: Mary Darbyshire
Register Type: Bishops Transcripts
Reference Number: Drm/2/110 [7]

This would be all good and well but Sarah had two (known thus far) siblings ...

Mary Ann - born circa1814, in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [8]
John - born circa 1817, in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [8]

... and there is no record found to date of a James and Mary Darbyshire having a daughter Mary Ann within the timeframe. However there is a record for a James and Mary Darbyshire having a son John, and the date does add up;

Name: John Derbyshire
Baptism Date: 15 Sep 1816
Parish: St Helen's, Lancashire, England
Father: James Derbyshire
Mother: Mary Derbyshire
Register Type: Bishop's Transcripts
Reference Number: Drl 2/400 [9]

Mary Ann and John are proven to be Sarah's siblings as there are records showing three of Sarah's daughters, Elizabeth, Ellen, and Mary Ann, living with Mary Ann (Darbyshire) Powell and her husband Thomas Powell - as transcribed below from the England Census' of 1861 and 1871. In the England Census of 1881, Sarah's daughter Ellen is still living at the same address as her aunt Mary Ann, now with her husband John Blacklock, and their eldest son Arthur Wellesley Blacklock. Sarah's and Mary Ann's brother John Darbyshire is also living with Mary Ann (Darbyshire) Powell in 1881.

Household 1861: [10]
Church Tavern, Greengate, Salford
Thomas Powell, Head, 63Y, Beer Retailer.
Mary Powell, Wife, 47Y.
Elizabeth Ankers, 17Y, neice.
Ellen Ankers Powell*, 13Y, neice
*Powell?? Can not find any records of where Elizabeth's & Ellen's parents, John and Sarah (nee Darbyshire) Ankers, are living at this time.
Household 1871: [11]
Church Tavern, Greengate, Salford
Thomas Powell, Head, 75Y, Publican.
Mary Ann Powell, Wife, 56Y.
Ellen Hankin*, 22Y, Neice.
Mary A Hankin*, 15Y, Neice.
*transcribed HANKIN, but written HANKERS.
Household 1881: [8]
58 Sussex St, Salford
Mary Ann Powell, Head*, 66Y, Widow, Relised (re-leased?) Publican
John Darbyshire, 63Y, Brother, Out of work.
John Blacklock, Head*, 35Y, Commercial Clerk to Felt Manufacturer
Helen (aka Ellen Ankers) Blacklock, Wife, 33Y, Dressmaker.
Arthur W Blacklock, 4Y, Son, Scholar.
*Two heads of household.

The only Sarah, Mary Ann, and John Darbyshire found to date with parents with names in common are the children of a William & Martha Darbyshire, but the dates don't add up. However all these baptisms occured within a 5 mile radius;

Name: Sarah Darbyshire
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 1 Jul 1804
Parish: Prestwich, St Mary
Parish as it Appears: Prestwich
Father's name: William Darbyshire
Mother's name: Martha Darbyshire
Reference Number: L160/1/2/2
Item Number: 3
Archive Roll: 590 [12]
Name: Mary Ann Derbyshire
Baptism Date: 17 May 1812
Parish: Manchester, Lancashire, England
Father's name: William Derbyshire
Mother's name: Martha Derbyshire
Register Type: Bishops Transcripts
Reference Number: Drm/2/130b [13]
Name: John Darbishire
Birth Date: 17 Sep 1815
Birth Place: Parridice Court, Salford.
Gender: Male
Event Type: Baptism
Father: William Darbishire
Mother: Martha Darbishire
Baptism Date: 18 Sep 1815
Baptism Place: Hulme, Lancashire, England
Denomination: Christ Church
Piece Title: Piece 0024: Hulme, Christ Church: Burials*, 1811-1828 [14]
*Most odd, John's baptism is recorded among all the burials! It is none-the-less definately a baptism record.

To add more icing to the riddle cake, there were two marriages of William Darbyshire's to Martha's just prior to 1799 in the whole of England, and both were in Lancashire;

Name: William Derbyshire
Gender: Male
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 29 Dec 1796
Parish: Warrington, Lancashire, England
Spouse: Martha Penketh
Register Type: Bishop's Transcript [15]
Name: William Derbyshire
Gender: Male
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 23 Apr 1797
Parish: Billinge, Lancashire, England
Spouse: Martha Cann
Register Type: Bishop's Transcript [16]

Of note, William and Martha are also the names of Sarah's two eldest children. She does have a daughter Mary Ann, possibly named after her sister. Sarah didn't name any of her children James.

The only other record located to date for a Sarah Darbyshire in the timeframe 1799 - 1804 is as follows;

Name: Sarah Darbyshire
Baptism Date: 27 May 1804
Parish: Standish, St Wilfrid, Lancashire, England
Father's name: Darbyshire
Mother's name: Mary Darbyshire
Register Type: Parish Register
Reference Number: Pr 180 [17]

... but there are no records located to date for this Mr Darbyshire and Mary Darbyshire having had a son John and/or a daughter Mary Ann in the timeframe.
