Sarah died Oct-Nov-Dec 1871 in Salford, cited aged 71, which gives her a birthdate circa 1800 [4]. She is also cited with the following contradictory ages and places of birth;
This would be all good and well but Sarah had two (known thus far) siblings ...
Mary Ann - born circa1814, in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [8]
John - born circa 1817, in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [8]
... and there is no record found to date of a James and Mary Darbyshire having a daughter Mary Ann within the timeframe. However there is a record for a James and Mary Darbyshire having a son John, and the date does add up;
Mary Ann and John are proven to be Sarah's siblings as there are records showing three of Sarah's daughters, Elizabeth, Ellen, and Mary Ann, living with Mary Ann (Darbyshire) Powell and her husband Thomas Powell - as transcribed below from the England Census' of 1861 and 1871. In the England Census of 1881, Sarah's daughter Ellen is still living at the same address as her aunt Mary Ann, now with her husband John Blacklock, and their eldest son Arthur Wellesley Blacklock. Sarah's and Mary Ann's brother John Darbyshire is also living with Mary Ann (Darbyshire) Powell in 1881.
Mary Ann Powell, Head*, 66Y, Widow, Relised (re-leased?) Publican
John Darbyshire, 63Y, Brother, Out of work.
John Blacklock, Head*, 35Y, Commercial Clerk to Felt Manufacturer
Helen (aka Ellen Ankers) Blacklock, Wife, 33Y, Dressmaker.
Arthur W Blacklock, 4Y, Son, Scholar.
*Two heads of household.
The only Sarah, Mary Ann, and John Darbyshire found to date with parents with names in common are the children of a William & Martha Darbyshire, but the dates don't add up. However all these baptisms occured within a 5 mile radius;
*Most odd, John's baptism is recorded among all the burials! It is none-the-less definately a baptism record.
To add more icing to the riddle cake, there were two marriages of William Darbyshire's to Martha's just prior to 1799 in the whole of England, and both were in Lancashire;
Of note, William and Martha are also the names of Sarah's two eldest children. She does have a daughter Mary Ann, possibly named after her sister. Sarah didn't name any of her children James.
The only other record located to date for a Sarah Darbyshire in the timeframe 1799 - 1804 is as follows;
... but there are no records located to date for this Mr Darbyshire and Mary Darbyshire having had a son John and/or a daughter Mary Ann in the timeframe.
