Biography

Mary Ann Dares was born April 5th, 1812, in Blandford, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of George Frederick Dares and his wife Elizabeth (Knock). She was baptized on May 26th, 1812, at the Dutch Reformed Church in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, with Chas Demone & wife, Mary Catherine in attendance.^{[1] [2][3]} Her father George worked as a farmer. He was the son of Jacques Dorey and Elizabeth Langille, who emigrated from France in the late 1700's and settled in Lunenburg Country. Over the years their surname can be found as Dorey, Dorry, Darey, Doray, Dare, and Dares, as spelling conventions were somewhat fluid.

On December 29th, 1829, Mary Ann married William H. Cleveland in Blandford, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, the son of James & Elizabeth Cleveland. ^[4]

William and Mary Ann had ten or possibly eleven children:^[5][6]

In 1871, William and Mary Ann had five of their adult children at home as well as Mary Ann's mother Elizabeth, while James lived next door on one side and Henry on the other.^[8]

William passed away on July 6th, 1880, at Bayswater, Nova Scotia, and his will was probated on July 27th, 1880, naming his wife and two of his sons as executors, and naming as heirs all of his children except Isabella, and Hannah who had already passed away. ^[9][10] His wife Mary Ann stayed with their son Brenton and lived another ten years before passing away on December 21st, 1890.^[11][12]
