George was born in 1875. He was the son of Thomas Davie and Margaret Colling. His birth appears not to have been registered officially, though he appears in all the normal records after that. The initial "N" in his name is assumed to stand for Nasbet (or other spellings), after his father's mother Sarah Nesbit. Most of his siblings carried the same middle name.
By occupation he was a shipyard worker, and was thus employed in Sunderland's principal industry, shipbuilding. In 1939, a year before his death, he described himself as a "plater's helper, retired".
In 1898 he married Margarethe Enevoldsen, daughter of a Copenhagen-born merchant seaman who had settled and married in Sunderland. The couple had ne daughter, Margaret Ann Davie. George passed away in 1941.
