William H. Davis was born about 1850 in Vermont. He was the child of Elizabeth Green(e) and Civil War veteran William A. Davis of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and the brother-in-law of Civil War veteran Leander W. Freeman of the same regiment as his father.
His father was also an Underground Railroad operative in St. Albans, Vermont.
Other persons of St. Albans who were active in helping runaways were the members of the Stranahan family and William Davis, a negro barber, whose house stood back of the Tremont Hotel. William's grandson, LeRoy E. Satchell, reports that his mother, Sophronia Davis Satchell, repeatedly told him that her father often cared for fugitive slaves in his home.[1]
