Benjamin was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1895. He trained as a fitter and turner, serving an apprenticeship with Messrs Harvey & Son in Brisbane and subsequently worked in charge of the power house at the Military Hospital at Enoggera in Brisbane.
On 22 Nov 1917 he applied to become an Australian Munitions Worker, to work in the UK. He was accepted as Australian Munitions Worker 4011 and departed Sydney, Australia on the "Balmoral Castle" on 12 Apr 1918 and disembarked at Tilbury Docks in England on 22 Jun 1918.
He worked for Neiuport and General Aircraft Company at Cricklewood until Dec 1918 when he contracted influenza. He decided to stay with relatives in Ireland to recuperate.
Benjamin returned to Australia on the "Bahia Castillo from Devonport, England on 18 Jul 1919, disembarking in Brisbane on 22 Oct 1919. His agreement was terminated that day as complete.
He married Ivy Lillian Rollston in Brisbane in 1929.
