Mary was born about 1799 in Charles County, Maryland. In 1825, she married Philip Herbert.[1] By 1840, the census indicates that they had five children (2 sons and 3 daughters) all born between 1826-1840. They also had 15 "Free Colored" in the household (6 males and 9 females), as well as 5 slaves (2 males and 3 females).[2]
Philip passed away between 1842-1850, and in 1850 Mary is enumerated as a widow with the following children in St Mary's County, Maryland.[3]
The Slave Schedule for the same year enumerated the following as slaves of Mary Herbert:[4]
Mary and the children remained in the 4th District through the next ten years, when the household consisted of Mary (55, F, MD), Chapman K (25, M, MD), Amanda (17, F, MD), and Samuel (13, M, MD). She valued her real estate at $1,000 and her personal estate at $2,000.[5] The Slave Schedule for the same year enumerated the following slaves for Mary.[6]
In 1870, Mary (72, F, MD) was living with the family of her daughter Amanda and son-in-law Francis Adams in District 5, St Mary's County, Maryland.[7]
Mary passed away in November 1870, shortly after the 1870 Census, and is buried at Christ Church Cemetery in St Mary's County, Maryland.[8]
