Biography

Mary was born about 1799 in Charles County, Maryland. In 1825, she married Philip Herbert.[1] By 1840, the census indicates that they had five children (2 sons and 3 daughters) all born between 1826-1840. They also had 15 "Free Colored" in the household (6 males and 9 females), as well as 5 slaves (2 males and 3 females).[2]

Philip passed away between 1842-1850, and in 1850 Mary is enumerated as a widow with the following children in St Mary's County, Maryland.[3]

  1. Washington P Herbert (ca 1828)
  2. Chapman K Herbert (ca 1830)
  3. Mary J Herbert (ca 1833)
  4. Julia A Herbert (ca 1838)
  5. Amanda Herbert (ca 1843)
  6. Samuel Herbert (ca 1847) Where was he in 1850?

The Slave Schedule for the same year enumerated the following as slaves of Mary Herbert:[4]

Male Slaves: (1) age 35, born 1825; (1) age 65, born 1785
Female Slaves: (1) age 26, born 1824; (1) age 4, born 1846; (1) age 2, born 1848

Mary and the children remained in the 4th District through the next ten years, when the household consisted of Mary (55, F, MD), Chapman K (25, M, MD), Amanda (17, F, MD), and Samuel (13, M, MD). She valued her real estate at $1,000 and her personal estate at $2,000.[5] The Slave Schedule for the same year enumerated the following slaves for Mary.[6]

Male Slaves: (1) age 40, born 1820
Female Slaves: (1) age 35, born 1825

In 1870, Mary (72, F, MD) was living with the family of her daughter Amanda and son-in-law Francis Adams in District 5, St Mary's County, Maryland.[7]

Mary passed away in November 1870, shortly after the 1870 Census, and is buried at Christ Church Cemetery in St Mary's County, Maryland.[8]

Named Slaves, 1864

Research Notes

Mary may have been Philip's second wife. In 1850, she was next door to John C Herbert, b 1794, MD, who may have been a child of Philip's first marriage. Check marriage records & wills.
