Biography

James Dawkins was born in 1760 in Clarendon, Parish of Middlesex, Jamaica.
He was the 1st surviving son of Henry Dawkins MP of Over Norton and Standlynch, Wiltshire, England and Lady Juliana Colyear daughter of Sir Charles Colyear KT, 2nd Earl of Portmore.

Education James Dawkins was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, England. 4 May 1779, aged 18.

First Marriage James Dawkins married (1m) on the 3rd September, 1785, Mrs.Hannah (Phipps) Long (d. 3 July 1815), daughter of Thomas Phipps of Heywood, Wiltshire, England., widow of Charles Long of Grittleton, Wiltshire. 2s. d.v.p. 1da.

Second Marriage James married (2m) on the 10th September 1822, Maria Margaret Forbes (1781-1865) at Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. ^[1]
She was the daughter of Gen. Gordon Forbes of Ham, Surrey, England and Margaret Sullivan.

He succeeded his father in 1814, to the estates of his cousin, Thomas Charles Colyear, 4th Earl of Portmore, 1835 and took name of Colyear bef. Dawkins by royal licence on the 24th December, 1835.

James Colyear Dawkins passed away on the 13th March 1843.
