Lieven de Key was born in Gent abt. 1560. His mother, as a widow fled in 1584 with her children to Londen.. In 1585 the family 'De Key' were registered members of the Parishchurch St. Masters in Londen. Short after their arrival, in the same year, sonLieven married Cathelijne de Caluwe who just like him was from Gent. From this marriage three children were born in Londen. In Londen Lieven probably wasn't working as an architect already, at least there are no construction activities (buildings) known of him there. In 1591 the family moved to Haarlem and Lieven became one of the most important Dutch architects of the Dutch Renaissance. Lieven was renowned architect and stonemason of the city Haarlem,
He was one of the 15,000 emigrants from the Southern Netherlands in 1584 when the Duke of Parma reconquered this area for Catholic Spain .
Lieven died at Haarlem on 17 July, 1627
