and Praxid (or Praxeda), dau. of William Button of co. Wilts.[1][2]
Origins
The de la Estcourt family was an old landed gentry family in Wessex (Devon, Dorset, Wilts). In the 16th Century they progressively changed the spelling of their name from old French (Gyles de la Estcourt) to English (Giles Estcourt).
Siblings
His older brother was Thomas Estcourt (d. 1599).[2] Edith was his older sister.
Sometime before 27 June 1571, Giles married Elizabeth (will 16 Mar 1601, proved 05 May 1602; bur. St. Edmonds, Salisbury, co. Wilts),[3] dau. of William Webb of Salisbury & wid. of Robert (or John?) Rogers of Poole, co. Dorset (d. 1555).[1][2][4][5]
He was educated at Lincoln's Inn school for barristers in London, admitted 12 March 1558[9], and called to the bar (graduated) in 1565. [1]
Occupation
Giles Estcourt, Esquire (1542-1587), sat in 5 Parliaments at Westminster as Member (MP) for Salisbury between 1563 and 1587. Both his son, Edward, and grandson, Giles, were knighted but Sir Giles fought for King Charles I and was fined; both of his sons died without issue and so his baronetcy was extinguished before 1700.[10]
