Biography

Maria was born in 1811, the daughter of don Rafael Antonio Luna and Ana Maria Tafoya, in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, where she was raised and lived out her life.

When just 15 years of age, Maria married Ceran St. Vrain, the son of Jacques Marcellin Ceran Dehault and Marie Felicite (Dubreuil) St. Vrain, in Taos.

Maria and Ceran had one child:

Jose Vincent St. Vrain (1827-1876)

It is assumed Maria and Ceran were married and that at some point between the birth of their son in May of 1827 and Maria's second marriage to Jose Julian Sandoval in September of 1828, the marriage to Ceran was annulled. Another school of contention is that Ceran was a womanizer who had many amorous encounters in his life and Senorita Luna was one of them. Giving credence to this non-marriage argument is the following information: Ceran is conspicuously absent at the christening of his son, and the following information taken from the Taos County, New Mexico - Taos County Marriages archive - [1]:

On September 30, 1828 - Jose Julian Sandoval, single, son of Santiago Sandoval and Maria Candelaria Baldes, resident of the jurisdiction of San Juan de los Caballeros with Maria Dolores de Luna single daughter of Don Rafael de Luna and Ana Maria Tafoya, resident of the Plaza of San Fernando, Padrinos: Felipe Baldes and Maria Magdalena Gonzales, Witnesses: Santiago Martines and Manuel Antonio Martin, all residents of San Fernando.

Note that Maria is called "single".

No records of Maria and Jose having children of their own have been found.

Maria died sometime around 1839. She would have been only about 28 years of age. No death or burial record could be found.
