Robert was the son of Sir Henry de Vere (constable of Gisors in France) and his wife Hildeburga (daughter of Baldwin de Bosco). Robert became Lord of Addington and Twywell, in Northampton, by gift of his uncle, Sir William de Vere, and of the town of Thrapston, from the gift of Baldwin de Blake, on his marriage to Margaret, Baldwin's aunt. By this wife, he probably had two sons, Baldwin and John. [1]
Led by Louis IX of France, Robert was killed in the Seventh Crusade's main battle at Mansoura, Egypt. He served as the standard bearer for Sir William Longespee in the battle. [2]
