Biography

John William Debruler was born about 1845 in Harrison County, Kentucky, United States. The 1850 and 1860 census indicate that he was the son of Jacob T. Debruler and Mary J. (Harris) Debruler (abt.1825-1853), though no direct evidence has yet been found.[1][2]

Private John Debruler served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 16 Mar 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Co. K, Kentucky 55th Infantry

On 16 March 1865, John enlisted in Company B of the 55th Kentucky Infantry for one year of service. He was listed as John D. Bruler, age 18; a farmer born in Harrison County. He was 5 feet, 6 inches tall and had blue eyes, light hair and a fair complexion.[3] During his service, he was hospitalized in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky with typhoid fever on 24 Jul 1865.[4]

John married Eliza Jane Mullen in Harrison County on 23 Apr 1866. The bride's mother gave consent in writing, though this has not been found. Jacob T. Debruler was surety for the bond, and the ceremony was performed at his house by S.A. Whiteker. Sim A. Debruler, David Debruler and Ed Arnold were witnesses.[5][6] Eliza apparently died not long after.

On 2 Oct 1870, John married Elizabeth (Bruin) Stewart in Bracken County, Kentucky.[7] By 1880, the census records John's family living in neighboring Pendleton County, Kentucky.[8] John filed for a military pension on 28 Aug 1890. Elizabeth filed for a widow's pension on 2 May 1898.[9]

Debruler-66 and Debruler-56 appear to represent the same person because: Debruler-66 contains minimal information, but appears to represent the same individual per census records attached as Debruler-56.
