Richard first appears in the Census Record of 1851 living with his wife Ellen (Sullivan) and their children Richard, Mary Ann and Catherine "Kate" (Derose). They reside at 3 Old Nichol Street, in the District of Bethnal Green, east of the City of London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, London & Middlesex, England[4]. In 1861, Richard and Ellen are living with their children Richard, Mary Ann, Catherine "Kate", Rachel and Alice (Derose). Their address is now 3 Middle Walk, Bethnal Green, London & Middlesex, England[5].

By 1871, Richard and Ellen have settled with their children Richard, Catherine "Kate", Thomas, Alice and Ellen "Nellie" Elizabeth (Derose) in the City of Brampton, in the Greater Toronto area, County of Peel, in the Province of Ontario, in Canada[6]. They are still in the City of Brampton, Ontario with the Census Record of 1881. Their children Thomas, Alice, Ellen "Nellie" Elizabeth and Charles William (Derose) also reside with them[7]. Occupation

The Census Record of 1851 has Richard employed as a Brass Finisher but by 1861, he has become a Fish Salesman. At the time of his assisted immigration to Canada, he puts down his occupation as being a Farmer. However, by 1871, he is a Gun Smith, taking up his father William's profession and then, in 1881, is employed as a Machinist. It seems by 1891, Richard has changed occupations again and is now recorded as being a Porter.

Immigration

Richard (Derose) and Ellen (Sullivan) and children emigrate to Canada aboard the S. S. Germany, departing from the Port of Liverpool, on the River Mersey, in Lancashire, England. They arrive in April 1869 at the Port of Quebec, Quebec, in Canada[9]. The family has come across to Canada through the Assisted Immigration process and applies for it on the 4 May 1869[10].
