Biography

Moses was born in 1813. Moses Dew baptized 10 March 1813 Gamlingay, son of John Dew and Lucy. Moses Dew married Mary Paine on 28 Jan 1834 or 28 Feb 1835, witnessed by Philip Dew and Lucy Dew. In 1841 Moses Dew was a farmer of Mill Street Gamlingay, living with wife Mary 25, Ulysses 2, John Samuel 3 months and Mary Ann Paine 15. Zachariah Gray and his wife Mary lived next door in 1841 and 1851. In 1851 Moses Dew 39 was a farming bailiff living in Mill street, Gamlingay, with Mary 37, Ulysses 11, John Sarle 10, Moses Samuel 8. William 6, Marianne 4, Lucy Ellen 2 all born in Gamlingay, and a servant.

In 1861 Moses 49 was a farmer living in Mill street with Mary 46, John A 20, Mary 18, Moses S 16, William 14, Jane 12, Lucy E 9 and a servant and a visitor. Moses was under a distress for rent when he sold nine horses, brown nag horse, 11 head of cow stock, four sows, five broad-wheeled carts, &c. [Cambridge Independent Press, 16 Jan 1864] Moses Dew of Gamlingay, farmer was bankrupt in 1864. [Sun, London, 6 May 1864] In 1864 all live and dead farming stock and growing crops of cornat Gamlingay and Great Gransden were to be sold at auction by order of the assignee of Moses Dew, bankrupt. This included 28 acres wheat, 24 acres barley, 14 acres beans, 4 acres oats and 8 acres of seed tares on the farm at Gamlingay and 30 cres of wheat, 24 acres of barley, 4 acres of oats , 27 acres of bean and 13 acres of clover see on the farm at Great Gransden. [Bedford Mercury, 30 July 1864] In 1871 Moses Dew 59 born at Gamlingay was a book seller married, lodging at Gamlingay. Moses died in 1874.

In 1881 Mary 66 widow was living at Clare Hall Farm, Mill Street with John 38 a farm bailiff, Lucy E 30 and Jane 28, next door to William Gray in the Farm House. In 1891 Mary was a widow 76 living in Mill Street with John S 50 farmer, Lucy E 40 teacher of Dame School, Jane 37 and granddaughter Emma 13.
