William Dye was born on July 6, 1718 in Staten Island, Richmond Co., NY. He moved with his parents from Staten Island, Richmond Co., NY to Middlesex Co., NJ in 1725. William married Margaret Salter about 1736, probably in Middlesex Co., NJ. They had 12 children, born in New Jersey between 1738 to 1760. On Dec. 14, 1752, William Dye was listed as a landholder (tax payer) for Amboy Twp, Middlesex Co., NJ. William was one of the executors of his father's will, probated March 8, 1751. William signed his own will on September 4, 1784. William Dye died on September 6, 1784 in Middlesex , NJ. His will was probated in Princeton, Middlesex (now Mercer) Co., NJ on Feb. 3, 1785. At least three of their children moved to Mason County, Kentucky by 1793. Margaret Salter Dye died on June 16, 1799.William was the son of John Laurens Dey and Anne (Brown). His children with Margaret Salter were Rebecca, William II, Nemiah, Anne, Joseph, Lydia, Amy, John, Margaret, Kenneth, Peter, and Euphame.
A soldier under George Washington's command at Valley Forge: According to a bio of one of his descendants: "William Dye was a soldier under the command of George Washington in the Revolutionary War and participated in the campaign of New Jersey and the memo.
