Mary was baptised on 7 November 1808 at Titchfield as the daughter of Archibald Collingwood Dickson and Harriet his wife.[1]
She was married on Thursday 7th December 1826. at Titchfield by the Rev W Thresher - Claud Douglas Esq., of the EIC's Service married Mary Madelina the second daughter of Rear Admiral Sir Archibald Collingwood Dickson, Bart.[2]
Mary and Claud spent virtually all of their married life in India but about 1847 Mary returned to England because of ill-health. Towards the end of May 1848 Claud arrived back in England unexpectedly - possibly in response to information sent to him in India regarding Mary's health. He met up with Mary in Exeter and they both travelled to Bideford where they 'engaged a suite of apartments in the High Street'. 'On Wednesday 14 June, the family had all dined together - Claud and Mary and three of their children - and Mary seemed in good spirits, talking with her husband of their proposed embarkation for India in October. Soon after dinner, at nearly five o'clock, Mary rose from the table suddenly and went upstairs to her dressing-room, and after the lapse of about half a minute came hurriedly down, and rushed into the drawing-room, where she immediately fell senseless on the floor.' [3]
Mary had committed suicide by drinking hydrocyanic acid, and following a Coroner's Inquest, the jury returned a verdict of 'temporary insanity'.[4]
She was buried on 17 June 1848 at Bideford.
