Biography of Alexander Dingwall

Birth

A birth or baptism record for Alexander Dingwall has not been found. Alexander first appeared in parochial records of Sutherland, Scotland as an incomer from Clyne Parish, Sutherland, who fathered a child out of wedlock in Durness Parish, Sutherland, in 1787. Baptism records in Clyne Parish began in 1782. [1] If Alexander Dingwall was born in Clyne Parish, then it would have occurred many years before the start of baptism records in that parish.

Life

Three other children, two baptised

In addition to the six children baptized with his wife Christian Mackay as their mother, the records of Durness Parish, Sutherland, identified Alexander Dingwall as the father of three additional children.

  1. Mary Dingwall, daughter of Alexander Dingwall and Margaret Gilles, was baptised 11 March 1787. [2]
  2. Alexander Dingwall, son of Alexander Dingwall and Mary Sutherland, was baptised 16 October 1787. [3]
  3. Christian Dingwall, identified as a daughter of Alexander Dingwall, was married to James Campbell on 15 March 1822, but no baptism record for Christian was recorded in the Durness Parish register. [4]

Donaldlina Dingwall was born in in the pre-clearance township of Cnocbreac, and baptised as "Dollie" on 10 September 1803 in Durness Parish, Sutherland. Both parents were named in the baptism, but Donaldina's date of birth was not recorded. [7]

On 26 January 1827 Neil Dingwall of Sangobeg married Merran MacLeod of Achumore, daughter of Angus MacLeod, a shepherd, and his wife Janet Ross MacLeod in Achumore. [12] The marriage was held at Borley, the pre-clearance township where Merran's mother, Janet Ross MacLeod, was born in 1778 and lived for the first ten years of her life.

Research Notes

Christian Dingwall daughter of Alexander Dingwall of Sangobeg

On 15 March 1822 Christian Dingwall, identified as "daughter of Alexander Dingwall of Sangobeg," married James Campbell. No baptism was found for Christian Dingwall. It is possible that Christian Dingwall's mother was Christian Mackay.

James Campbell and his wife Christian/Christy Dingwall baptised three children in Durness Parish:

  1. John on 15 May 1823
  2. Alex on 31 August 1825
  3. Donald Neil on 3 August 1832
