Mathias was born at Mount Calvary in Wisconsin[1] and came to the Dakotas in the early 1880s. He met Lydia Fortier, who was born in Chicago and came to the Dakotas in 1883. They were married 15 Oct 1893 at Turton, Spink, South Dakota and had three sons and two daughters. They lived their married life on a farm in Sumner Township until he died 10 Feb 1916.[2] Lydia stayed on the farm till 1929 when she moved to Turton. She died 1 Mar 1966 at the James Valley Nursing Home in Redfield.
