Biography

George was born 11 Aug 1866, Castlemaine, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia . George married Mary in 1895 at Port Macquarie, they had children. George working with the postal department and he was in charged of the West Wallsend Post Office at the time of his wife Mary's death.

George passed away 29th April 1949 (aged 82)

  • Mr George Vickers Dobbie, of Rainbow Reach, Pelican Island who passed away in a private hospital in Kempsey on April 29. was one of the most respected men in the district. He was of the type sometimes put in the category of a "white man". The late Mr Dobbie , a son of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Dobbie was born in Maitland 82 Years ago, and was well known in the Sydney suburb of Coogee, His parents came from Scotland. He was a great mixer among men, sport being one of his favourite hobbies and, in which, he made many friends but no enemies . He was in the PMG department for many years and was postmaster at West Wallsend. He also performed similar duties at Port Macquarie . His wife nee Miss Mary McDonough , was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John McDonough , who owned the Star Hotel at Port Macquarie . He is survived by a daughter in Mrs Patrick (Ellen) Downes, of Rainbow Reach, and a son,John Hastings Dobbie. of Drummoyne . He was predeceased by two daughters. Mrs Sid (Lucy) Lineghan, of Coogee, and Mrs T. H. Johnson (Mary), of Young Wallsend. For the past ten years the late Mr Dobbie lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Patrick Downes, at Rainbow Reach. The funeral arrangements in Kempsey were handled by Messrs Harry B. and Jos. T. Walker and Rev Father McNamara officiated at the graveside in the Sandgate (Newcastle) cemetery.
