Obituary
Kilmore Free Press (Kilmore, Vic. : 1870 - 1954), Thursday 30 June 1892, page 2
DEATH OF MR. A. DOHERTY, J.P.
On Saturday last we received a telegram from Nagambie, informing us that Mr Anthony Doherty, J.P., of Hughes Creek had been shot by a neighbor and that but slight hopes were entertained of his recovery. On further enquiry we learned that on Friday evening Mr Doherty was deliberately fired at by a neighbor named Norris, with whom he had some angry words about the fencing of a road ; the charge of shot entered the breast and the unfortunate gentleman made his way, suffering severely, to his own house some distance away.
Norris proceeding to give himself up to the police.
Mr Doherty succumbed to the injuries received on Saturday, and on Tuesday the remains were interred in the Avenel Cemetery, the funeral cortege being a large one, comprising about 100 vehicles and many horsemen, many coming scores of miles— it was the largest procession ever seen in the district. The funeral service was read by Fr. Carr, and Mr J. Lyster, of Seymour, efficiently conducted the funeral arrangements.
Mr Doherty died as he lived, a good, forgiving Christian, expressing the hope that the man who took his life should escape the punishment which usually follows so serious an offence—it was, he said quite enough to lose one life over what was but a trivial dispute. The terrible tragedy has caused a feeling of universal gloom throughout the district, where the deceased had been a resident for over thirty years, commanding the high esteem and respect of all.
Mr Doherty leaves a large family, some of whom are young, and their terrible loss is intensified by the fact that their mother, a daughter of the late Mr M. Darcey, of Marengo station, near Seymour, died some time ago.
Mr Doherty was 58 years of age, and for many years was a Justice of the Peace, being faithful, intelligent and conscientious in the performance of the duties of that office, as well as any other duties he undertook. Years ago he was a member of the old Seymour Road Board, but for some time last did not take any prominent part in local politics. Knowing the deceased for many years we can only say that no more honorable or straightforward man could be met with—he was thorough and reliable in any work he undertook, faithful and trustworthy as a friend and most obliging as a neighbor. Whilst heartily sympathising with the bereaved family, to whom the loss would be severe if death came naturally, but must be intensified by the melancholy manner in which it has occurred, we trust He who has seen fit to thus cause the removal of a good and kindly father will temper the calamity in His own wise way.
Of deceased we will only say that melancholy as the circumstances of his demise are, there is little doubt he has been called to reap the reward of the good and the just. [4]
