Biography

Barbara (Donald) Cameron was born in Scotland.

Barbara Donald was born in Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire on 7 June 1806, the daughter of John Donald and Jean Ironside. She was christened on 2 July 1806.^[1][2]

Marriage and Family

Barbara and Lewis Cameron of the Parish of Methlick were married in the Parish of Monquhitter on 4 August 1832.^[3]
The couple had eight children over the next 18 years, sadly two of them were only children when they died:

1. Margaret b. Oct. 1832, Monquhitter.^[4].
2. Lewis b. Jul. 1834, Monquhitter d. 1869. ^[5]
3. Barbara b. 1836, Monquhitter. ^[6]
4. John b. May 1839, New Deer.^[7]
5. George Donald b. 1842, Methlick.^[6]
6. Isabella b. 1845, Methlick d. 1861.^[6] (Died aged 15)^[8]

From about 1841 to 1869 Barbara and Lewis were living with their four children, Margaret, Lewis, Barbara and John, at Middlemuir in Methlick where Lewis was a crofter with 30 acres of land.^[9][6]

Lewis Cameron, as head of the family, was tenant and occupier of land in Middlemuir owned by the Earl of Aberdeen. In 1855 he was paying £11 2s in annual rent.^[10] This occupation continued until at least 1865.^[11]
In the Ordnance Survey Name Books, Lewis Cameron (spp. Cammeron) of Middlemuir was listed as one of the authorities for the spelling of the name Black Burn which is the small Burn that forms the northern boundary of the Parish of Methlick. "Middlemuir" was the name - Applied to a large group of farm steadings with offices and gardens attached the property of the Right Honourable the Earl of Aberdeen situated near the North of the Parish.^[12]

Death of Husband
Barbara's husband Lewis passed away in Methlick in November 1869.^[13]

In 1871 Barbara's son Robert was head of the household farming 54 acres in Middlemuir. Also in the household were Robert's nieces and nephews (Barbara's grandchildren), Barbara Robertson (11), Alexander Henderson (9) and Jessie Ann Cameron (2). They had two servants, Alexander Crichton - a farm worker, and Christian Wilson a domestic servant. ^[14]

Death and Burial

Barbara passed away aged 68 in Methlick in 1875.^[15]

Research Notes

• No burial record could be found for Barbara. Ancestry Trees have an unsourced date of 18 May 1875 which may be confirmed or otherwise with a record from Scotland People.
• The only baptism records found for her children are those shown for John, Lewis and Margaret
• It is not clear who the "niece" Barbara Robertson in the 1871 census is. Of the three women in the family only two married - Brown and Henderson.
• Alexander Henderson has not been added to the profile for Barbara Cameron
