Charles Doudiet was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland. His father, Reverend Jacques-Frederic Doudiet, worked with the French Canadian Missionary Society.
Charles Doudiet moved to Canada in 1844 when he was 12. In 1852 Doudiet travelled to Australia. He arrived on the Magnolia which left New York on 27 July 1852 and arrivied at Port Phillip on 24 November 1852. On page six of the shipping list, Doudiet is recorded (line 9): Doudiet, Charles, Country of birth, Switzerland; age 20; Last legal residence Canada; Country naming allegiance British; Occupation carpenter; Baggage 1 chest, 12 bags.[1] A fellow passenger was Charles Ross, also from Canada.
In 1853 he was in Melbourne.[2]
Doudiet made eye-witness sketches of the burning of James Bentley’s Eureka Hotel, and other Eureka Stockade related scenes.

Doudiet may have been a participant at the Stockade on 3 December 1854. His sketch Eureka Slaughter shows the troops lined up attacking the stockade on 3 December 1854. Accompanying the sketch is a note: "Joyce, Penny and Fletcher along with myself carried Ross to the Star where he died in great pain at about 2am on the 5th".[3]

Charles married Rebecca Robinson on 21 March 1857 in Mascouche, Québec, Canada.[4] They had one child, Charles. Rebecca died in 1858.
In the 1861 census Charles (age 28 born Versoix, Geneva, Switzerland), Menuisier, was living in Montréal (St-Laurent), Montréal, Canada East, with other members of the Doudiet family including his brothers.[5]
Charles married Elizabeth Dunbar in 1861 in Montreal, Québec (Quebec), Canada.[6] They had at least five children.
In the 1871 census Charles (age 37), Clergyman, was recorded as married in St Laurent Ward, Montreal West, Quebec. He was living with his wife and five children and one other woman.[7]

In the 1891 census Charles (age 58) was the married head of household in Buckingham, Ottawa, Quebec, Canada. He was living with his wife and two daughters.[9]

Charles Doudiet died 13 June 1913 at Chelsea, Kennebec, Maine, United States. His death certificate stated he was 81 years, 4 months, 7 days old. He had been born at Neuchatel, Switzerland. His father was Freidrick Doudiet, occupation minister. his mother was Laura Batifolia. Both parents were foreign born.[10]
