Biography

Agnes Dougall … also known as Agnes McDougall … was born on 23rd October 1830 at Lang Rigg Farm in the town of Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of James Dougall/ McDougall and his wife Mary Scott.

On 30th November 1855, shortly after her 25th birthday, she married John Parlane at Glaudhall, Chryston, in Lanarkshire. [1] The record of their marriage can be found at the Scottish Record Office; Register of Marriages; 1855; Cadder; FHC film #103610; #21:

"On 30 November 1855 at Glaudhall, Chryston, Parish of Cadder, married according to the rites and ceremonies of the Free Church of Scotland.

John Parlan [sic; signed], present and usual address Chryston, Cadder, 25 years, agricultural labourer, second marriage, born at Innerkep, Ayrshire and registered there, son of James Parlane [sic], agricultural labourer and Martha nee Riddel [sic];

TO: Agnes Dougall [sic], present and usual address Glaudhall, Chryston, Cadder, 26 years, cook, born at Langrigg, Cadder, Lanarkshire, daughter of James Dougall, farmer and Margaret nee Scott

David Dougall and James Parlane, witnesses; both signed. Wm Burns?, minister, Bonkle, Cambusnethan James Noble, Registrar, 3 December 1855."

Agnes and John emigrated to New Zealand with their three young sons aged 2, 4, and 6 years on the "Queen of the Mersey", leaving London, England on 3rd July 1862 and arriving off Lyttleton in Canterbury, New Zealand on 19th October 1862. Because of the poor weather conditions the emigrants couldn't come ashore until the following day … which must have been frustrating since they'd already spent 108 days at sea!

She passed away in 1920, aged 91 and is buried at the Oxford Cemetery, Canterbury, New Zealand.
