Note

In 1881 at the time of the census, the Douglas family live in Edinburgh at 15 High School Yards, Lady Yesters.

The Head of Household is Andrew Douglas, age given as 28. The ages given for Andrew Douglas are inconsistent and it is more likely he is 38 as in the 2 subsequent census's he and his wife are ten years older than they otherwise would have been. He was born in Selkirk and is a quarryman. Andrew Douglas is my great-great grandfather. Andrew's wife is Ann Douglas, age given as 29, born in Hawick, Roxburgh. She has no given occupation, so we assume she is a homemaker raising her children. Ann Douglas is my great-great grandmother.

Andrew and Ann have 5 children: Richard (10), Eliza(beth) (7), William (4), Anne Douglas (2) and Helen (1). The 3 elder children were all born at Selkirk, which suggests they lived their and moved to Edinburgh before the two youngest were born, in the parish of St Andrews, Edinburgh.

There is a 12 year old boarder, Wiliamina Stoallis, at this address, as well as 4 lodgers.

Anne is my great-grandmother and it is likely her name is misspelled here as her mother's name always appears without the E when she is called Ann. Records also refer to both as Annie.

Helen, my great-great aunt was known to me as Atty.

In 1891 at the time of the census, the Douglas family live in Edinburgh. The Head of Household is Andrew Douglas, age now given as 47. He is now a chemical still manufacturer. Andrew Douglas is my great-great grandfather. Andrew's wife is Ann Douglas, age now given as 39. Ann Douglas is my great-great grandmother.

All 5 children continue to live with their parents. Richard (20) is a public house waiter. William (15) is a tinsmith's apprentice. Ann Douglas (12) and Helen (11) are at school. Ann Douglas is is my great-grandmother. The eldest daughter, Elizabeth is now 18 and is listed as married and, under Occupation, formerly? a machinist. He husband appears to be one James Douglas aged 25 a fishmonger listed as son-in-law. Also listed is a one week old baby listed as Andrew Scott. I am assuming that Elizabeth did not marry someone who shared the same surname but that her husband's name is James Scott and that Andrew is their child, named after his grandfather.

Andrew and Annie Douglas, my great-great grandparents, now live at 5 East London Street Edinburgh. Andrew Douglas is aged 59 and now works as a shop porter. Annie Douglas is 49.

By 1901 the second youngest child, Annie Douglas, my great-grandmother has married William Gray and left home. All her siblings appear to have left home as well with one exception

The youngest, Helen, known to me as Atty, is now listed as Nellie. Aged 21 she still lives with he parents. She has a job as a printer compositor. I understood from Nana that she was the first female in Scotland to hold this position and that her job was at The Scotsman, compositing newspaper type.
