Named in the 30 Jul 1675 Will^{[1] [2]} of his mother Cuthbury Usher who had remarried Henry Usher of Barbados after her husband Leonard Dowden/Dowding died.

The Will of Benjamin Dowding of St Lucy's Parish in Barbados was made on 8 Aug 1689 and proved on 12 Jun 1690.^[3] He says he had received command as a Lieutenant of a company of foot of which Captain Swift was Captain under the command of Hon, Sir Timothy Thornhill Barrt. who was Colonel and Commander in Chief of forces and ordered to set sail from the island to Windward Guardaloop on -- Aug to St Christopher to relieve and assist sisterssed (?) protestants who had been barbarously by credible information dealt with by the blood thirsty Irish papist inhabitants in the island. The Will names:

• Wife Alice Dowding, who was pregnant
• Brother Samuel Dowding
• Son Leonard Dowding
• Daughter Margaret Dowding

Benjamin Dowden was alive on 18 Dec 1869 when he was sent by Sir Timothy Thornhill to board a sloop near St Martins.^[4]
