Biography

OBITUARY

MRS. M. T. McTERNAN

With the passing of Mrs. Mary Theresa McTernan, relict of the late Mr. Bernard McTernan, another of the older residents of Nowra closely related with the earlier development of the town has passed on to Eternity. The late Mrs. McTernan had been a patient of the 'Shoalhaven' Hospital, Bridge Road, Nowra, for many weeks, and her death occurred there on Wednesday, when she passed peacefully away at the age of 75.

Widely known and much beloved for her womanly attributes, the late Mrs. McTernan was highly esteemed and respected by a large number of friends and acquaintances, her neighbourly and charitable qualities adding to her endearment. The deceased was a native of Braidwood, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Draper, of that town. Most of her married life was spent in Nowra, but periods of some years were also spent in Bombala and Queanbeyan, where her husband, the late Mr. Bernard McTernan, or 'Barney' McTernan, as he was known to all, was a picturesque figure in the early coaching days, known far and wide for his prowess with the whip.

The late Mrs. McTernan is survived by eight children. A son, Roy, was killed in the 1914-19 war. One of her daughters is Sister Mary Felicitas, of the Good Samaritan Convent, Arnclifie. The other children are Mrs. E. Arthur (Woollahra, Sydney), Mr. 'Dick' McTernan (Queanbeyan), Mrs. C. White (Annandale, Sydney), Mrs. H. Brown (Sutherland) , Mrs. A. Erwin (Nowra), Mrs. G. McKinnon (Nowra), and Mr. J. McTernan (Wardell, N.C.). A grandson, Private Roy Aldridge, is now serving his country with the fighting forces in Palestine.[1]
