Margaret Ann Duffy was born on12 June 1827 in Montrose, Angus, Scotland and baptised at St Margaret's, Ayr. She was the daughter of John Duffy and his wife Mary. ^[1]

She married Thomas Hickey in 1848 at St Mary's Roman Catholic church, Sydney.^[2] Together they had 7 children:
