Alfred was born in the third quarter of 1890, in the district of Poplar, London, England, and baptised 7 Sep 1890 in Poplar All Saints, Tower Hamlets, England. He was the son of Melville Dunn and Martha Wadham. ^{[1] [2]}

At the age of 14 years, Alfred registered with the Great Western Railway, in Poplar, London, England as a Vanguard. His wages on commencement was ten shillings. ^[3]

He married Lucy Constance Towler in 1913, in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. ^[4]
