William was born on 23 November 1850 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. He was the son of Thomas Clark Durant and Heloise Durant.^[1]

In the 1880 census William (age 29) was living in Johnsburg, Warren, New York, United States.^[2]

When William was 33 he married on 15 October 1884 in Stottville, Columbia, New York, United States. At St. Barnabas, Stottville, Oct. 15 by the Rev. Dr.Carey of Saratoga Springs, assisted by Rev. George Fisher, Rector.^[3]

When William was about 47 he married Janet Lathrop Stott in 1898. The couple had 3 children: Lawrence Thomas Durant, Heloise Timbrell Durant and Basil Napier Durant. Divorce:
