Alfred was born in 1865 in Hackney, London, the son of James Dykes and his wife Cahrlotte, nee Tilley.

He was baptised in the Established Church (Church of England) at St Michael and All Angels in Hackney, England on 21 Apr 1869 (along with a brother).[1] As probable Methodists (non-conformists) he may have been baptised in a Methodist ceremony closer to his birth.

From about 1886 he was active in the Brunswick St Methodist Church in Brisbane, being one of the first Treasurers of their Fortitude Valley Penny Savings Bank.[5] This was from an era when major banks would not take small deposits, so Penny Banks were established to help train the young in frugal habits.[6]

On 30 Jul 1917 Alfred applied to become an Australian War Worker, to work in the UK as a labourer or navvy under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply labour for the War effort. At the time he was married with 2 dependant children, a self-employed bootmaker living and working in South Brisbane, QLD.

He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 31 Jul 1917. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 1299 and embarked on the SS "Borda" at Adelaide, South Australia on 05 Jan 1918, arriving in Plymouth, England on 04 Mar 1918.

Alfred commenced work for Messrs. Trollope & Colls at Liverpool on 11 Mar 1918 as a labourer. Later, he was transferred to Trollope & Colls at Hamble.

On 18 Jan 1919 he advised he had been discharged.

Alfred embarked on the SS "Irishman" from Avonmouth, England on 08 May 1919, disembarking in Brisbane on 09 Jul 1919.[11] His agreement was terminated the same day as complete. His address was to be in Mt Gravatt, QLD.

In 1920 Alfred applied for a patent on an improved acetylene gas lamp.[12]

Alfred was one of the Trustees of the Mt Gravatt Reserve, when it was handed over to the Brisbane City Council in 1925.[13]
