All records for this person give his name as Nathan (death record, marriage record, numerous deeds). There seem no evidence that Nathaniel was ever used as his name, so perhaps it should be changed to Nathan for clarity.
My personal family records that have been passed down list both names, that is why both names are listed to help others with their research. Nathan is my 7th great-grandfather.
What do you mean by personal family records -- bible pages? letters written by Nathan or Nathaniel? or just what one of your relatives believed? In the absence of any primary source for Nathaniel as an alternative name, perhaps it should just be changed to Nathan.
