Howard Walter was born in 1892, in Somerville, Massachusetts, the son of Charles and Agnes (Jones) Eaton. [1]
He grew up in Somerville[2][3] and attended local schools, graduating from the Edgerly [Elementary] School in 1907[4] and the English High School in Somerville in 1911.[5][6] He was also a graduate of the Eastern Radio School.
At the time of the war draft in 1917, he was 24 years old and living on Wright Ave. in Medford, Massachusetts. He worked as a shipping clerk in Boston and was described as being of a medium stature, with dark brown hair and eyes.[7]
He enlisted to serve in the Naval Reserve Force on July 18, 1918, and was assigned to the Naval Training Camp in Hingham, Massachusetts, on August 27, 1918, with the lank of Landsman.[8] A month later he died there of influenza and pneumonia.[9] He was 26 years old. A service was held at his parents' home at 53 Albian St. in Somerville[10]. He is buried with his parents at the Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Massachusetts.[11]
His name is included in a memorial at Trum Field in Somerville, dedicated to the men from the neighborhood who died serving in World War I.
