Jacob emigrated to Pennsylvania from Zell am Ziller, Austria. He was Passenger # 553 on the ship, Donau, departing from Bremen, Germany, and arriving in New York on 24 April, 1875. The Passenger list shows him as age 31, male, coming from Tyrol (Austria).[1]
Jacob was a tailor by profession. The 1883 Pittsburgh Directory shows that he has a business on 3rd Street on what is now the North Side of Pittsburgh. It was known as Allegheny City at the time. Later, he had a shop on Dinwiddle Street on the North Side of Pittsburgh. The 1900 Census[2] shows his birthdate as May 1945 and that he was married to Louisa for 18 years, putting his marriage date around the year 1882.
Jacob's Certificate of Death[3] shows his date of death as May 4, 1932. His age is listed as 88 years, 4 days, implying April 30, 1844 as his date of birth. I have chosen the date listed on this certificate for his official DOD.
