Mary was born in 1830. She was the daughter of John Ecclesfield and Elizabeth Fawcett. She was baptized on the 16 May 1830 in the Parish Church of Morpeth, Northumberland, England.[1][2].
By 1841 she had left home and was living at Girrick, Nenthorn, Berwickshire in the household of Hannah McDugal (50 and presumably a widow) and her three children, probably working as a servant[3][4]. Her age was recorded as 15 and she was born in England.
Mary married Robert Metcalf on 14 May 1850 in Tweedsmuir, Peebles-shire, Scotland[5]. They had at least six children.
In 1851 Mary (21) and Robert (a grocer aged 27) were living at Durham Street, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yorkshire[6]. Her mother Elizabeth Ecclesfield (a farmer's wife aged 57 and born in Yorkshire) was visiting at the time, probably to help Mary with her first child who was born that year.
They had moved to East Street, Lower, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yorkshire by 1871[7][8]. The household comprised Robert ( a grocer aged 48), Mary (40), their children - Ann E (20), Richard (18), John (16), William (7), Mary (4) and Robert (3) - and Mary Arnett (a servant aged 14). They had moved again by 1881 to 40 Marsh Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire North Riding[9][10]. Robert was now a dray salter aged 57. Only three children were still at home - William (an assistant to his father as a dry salter aged 16), Mary (a housemaid (domestic) aged 15) and Robert (a scholar aged 13).
In 1891 they had moved along the road to 20, Marsh Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough[11]. Robert was now a wholesale dry salter (67) and Mary was 60. Only their son William (27) was still at home, and he was now a dry salter's traveller. They also had their grand-daughter Elizabeth Metcalf (15) with them, and she was working as a domestic servant.
Mary died after 1891 probably in England.
In the profile, this information was listed: "In the 1851 census Elizabeth Ecclesfield, her mother, though described as a visitor is with Mary and her husband Robert in Durham Street in Middlesbrough. They're listed as Medcalf rather than Metcalf though." I have not been able to find this census searching Medcalf and Metcalf and for both Mary, her husband, or the mother on FreeCen or FamilySearch. Her FamilySearch ID is 9KNJ-W91.McManigal-88 18:11, 12 January 2024 (UTC).
Neither Mary nor Robert have been found in the 1901 Census. Robert's death has been found in 1900 at Middlesborough[12]. If Mary survived him, she may have gone to live with one of her children and left Middlesbrough. A search of ScotlandsPeople brought up no likely entry. Nor has she yet been identified on either Free BMD or GRO. (Dickson-4413 00:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC))
