Biography

James Eden was born in 1881 in Haydock. He was the son of Robert Eden and Ann (Atherton) Eden.

By April 3rd 1881, Robert and Ann were living near Old Toll Bar in Haydock. Robert was working as a coal miner, and they had four children - Mary (aged 9), Robert (5), Ann (3) and baby James; the older two were in school, and all had been born in Haydock.

By April 5th 1891, they were living in Florida Cottages, Haydock. Robert was still a coal miner. The eldest child, Mary, was with her mother's sister Mary (Atherton) Turton in Blackbrook when the census was taken. The second child, Robert junior, was 15 and working as a coal miner like his father. There were five more children not in paid work yet - Ann (13), James (11), Joseph (7), John (4) and Elizabeth (1).

By March 31st 1901, they were living in Hargraves, Parr. Robert (senior) was still working as a coal hewer. There were four children in the household, all involved in coal haulage work - Robert junior, now 25; James aged 20; Joseph (17), and John (14).

James married Elizabeth Curran on July 29th 1901 at St Peter's Church in Parr (Anglican). He was 21, she was 20; neither had been married before. The fathers were Robert Eden and Thomas Curran.

James's mother probably died in 1902 in St Helens, at the age of 53. His father died in 1906 in Prescot district at the age of 55.

By April 2nd 1911, James and Elizabeth were living in St Helens. James was working as a coal hewer.
