George, age 31, enlisted in the Union Army Company F, 1st Regiment, Michigan Cavalry as Corporal, 20 Aug 1861 at Lapeer, for 3 years. Mustered 6 Sep 1861. Taken prisoner at Bull Run, Virginia 29 Aug 1862. Promoted to Wagoner 30 Jun 1863. Re-enlisted 21 Dec 1863. Mustered 21 Dec 1863. Transferred to Company M, 17 Nov 1865. Discharged at Fort Bridger, Utah, 25 Mar 1866. Because George re-enlisted 21 Dec 1863 for 3 more years while in the field, Michigan Military Records include the distinctive and honorable title of "veteran" placed after his name.^[3][4]

The 1st Michigan Cavalry was organized at Detroit, Michigan in late August and early September 1861. During his time in service, the Regiment was engaged in many battles, including: Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Five Forks. ^[5]

George was married to Harriet Stiles (age 16, born in Canada) on 20 May 1849 in Lapeer, Michigan, United States.^[6]

On 30 Sep 1883 and 30 Sep 1888, George was listed in the Michigan, Grand Army of the Republic Membership Reciords in Lapeer, Lapeer, Michigan.^[7][8]

He passed away 24 Dec 1904 in Los Angeles, California, United States and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[2][1]

Elliott is survived by his daughter Mrs. W.H. Messer.^[2]

Research Notes

The California Death Record indicates that George died on 24 Dec 1903^[13] however the records at Mountain View Cemetery indicate that he died 24 Dec 1904.^[14]
