John Ellis was born about 1842 in Liverpool, England. Papers past article 24 Jan 1928 records his parents as Welsh who returned to their native country in 1858 when John joined the 53rd regiment.
John came to New Zealand as a detachment of the 43rd regiment, Sargeant, which left England in November 1863 on board the Silver Eagle and arrived in Auckland on 3 March 1864. He retires from the Defence Force in 1866, Taranaki Herald 6 December 1905. He entertained the service of the late Mr William Halse, solicitor of New Plymouth with which he served for 16 years. For the next 20 years Colonel Ellis worked with the late Hon Oliver Samuel, and in 1902 joined the firm of Messrs Covett and Quilliam. In the meantime, Colonel Ellis had taken an active part in the administration of public affairs and was a member of the New Plymouth Town Board of 1875-1876. It is noteworthy that he was the last survivor of the first Borough Council of which he was a member from 1876 to 1878. In 1876 he was made chairman of the School Committee - the first under the Education Act. Colonel Ellis objected to having so many small schools of separate sexes and succeeded on inaugurating mixed schools. Colonel Ellis was a prominent Freemason in which lodge he held high office [1].
John married Annie Ward in New Plymouth in 1865 and they had 14 children: 5 sons and 9 daughters [2].
He passed away in 1928, aged 86 years and is buried in the Te Henui Cemetery and his death notice shows he is survived by children: Mrs Gordon, New York, Mrs J Harle, Wellington, Mrs AL Humphries, New Plymouth, Mrs F Good, Christchurch, Mrs HR Russel, Wellington, Mr T Ellis, Feilding and E Ellis, Waihi [3].
