Biography

Thomas Ellis, son of Gulielmi (William in Latin), was born on 28 July 1705 and baptised on 15 August 1705 in Sheffield, Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Yorkshire (West Riding), England.[1]

Thomas Ellis received his Bachelor of Arts degree at St John's College within Cambridge University. He was ordained as a Deacon within the Church of England on the 14th of July 1728 by Bishop Thomas Green of Ely; he was appointed as the preacher and curate of Stuntney Church on the 15th of July 1728. Thomas was ordained as a Priest on the 21st of September 1729 by Bishop Green. [2]

Thomas Ellis married Elz Robins in 1729 in Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, England.[3] Their children included:

  1. Thomas Ellis, son of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1730 and baptised on 28 October 1730 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[4] Thomas Ellis, son of Thomas, died in 1730 and was buried on 13 February 1730/1 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, England.[5]
  2. Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1733 and baptised on 31 December 1733 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[6]
  3. Mary Ellis, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1735 and baptised on 17 October 1735 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[7]
  4. William Ellis, son of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1739 and baptised on 20 July 1739 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[8]
  5. Thomas Robins Ellis, son of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1743 and baptised on 31 January 1743 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[9] Rev Thomas Robins Ellis of Kelshall, Hertfordshire, died before 19 Apr 1788, when his successor’s appointment was noted in the newspaper.[10]
  6. Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth, was born in 1746 and baptised on 18 July 1746 in Ely, Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.[11]
  7. William Wade Ellis (bef.1751-1785)

He died between 24 Jun 1758, when his Will was signed, and 10 Nov 1764, when his Will was proved.

In 1764, Thomas Atcherley replaced Thomas Ellis as canon at Ely Cathedral.[12]

Will of Rev Thomas Ellis

Signed 24 Jun 1758 and Proved 10 Nov 1764 The Will of the Rev Thomas Ellis, clerk of Ely, Cambridgeshire,[13] mentions:

Wife Elizabeth (sole executrix, survived her husband)
two sons Thomas Robins Ellis and William Wade Ellis
two sisters Mary Ashforth of Sheffield, widow, and Anne the wife of Robert Jennings[?] of Chesterfield
nephew Daniel Boote DD, who is to be guardian of Thomas’ sons should Thomas’ wife Elizabeth die before they reach 21

Research Notes

Watch out, there are at least two more men with the same name having children in Ely around the same time as this Thomas Ellis.[14]

I've addded the nephew Daniel Boote who's father married Mary Ellis, but I've been unable to get any further with baptisms for the Ellis family who were apparently born in Yorkshire which seems feasible given the number of Ellises in the area, and Mary coming from Sheffield.[15]

Thomas Ellis, as we see above, became a Minor Canon. He died in 1764. His son, Thomas Robins Ellis, was B.A. of Queens' College in 1765 and a Fellow of that Society. Born in Yorkshire 1705.

I believe that these two entries in the clergy database relate to the same Thomas Ellis. [16] Whitehouse-2064 16:33, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

P. 41 no. 39. The name of this youth was originally entered in the Register as then a pen was drawn through Thomas and Gulielmus written above. It seems however almost certain that his Christian name was Thomas. A Thomas Ellis matriculated in the University, from St John's, 11 July 1724. The College Register records the admission of no other Thomas Ellis to the College. He proceeded to B.A. 1727 and M.A. 1733. Again, Thomas Ellis, B.A. of St John's College, born in the County of York in 1705 (which corresponds with the age in the College Register) was ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Ely 12 July 1728 and was licensed to the curacy of Stuntney. He was ordained Priest at Ely 19 September 1729, with the title of a Minor Canon in Ely. Cole, in his MSS. (Vol. xxx, Brit. Mus. Addl. MSS. 5831, fol. 154a, 155a) gives the following letter from Bishop Greene to Dean Moss of Ely (also printed in Nichols, Literary Illustrations, iii, 563). ELx HoUsE, Mar. 16, 1727.
GOOD MR DEAN,
I think myself much obliged to you and the chapter for your kind readiness in despatching the confirmation of Dr Peck's and my servant's patents. One Mr Ellis, a Bachelor of Arts of St John's College, came hither on Thursday last for Deacon's Orders, under a Pretence that he had a prospect of being chosen a Minor Canon in your Church. What he alledged for himself might be true for ought I know; but not bringing with him an undoubted certificate thereof, as the Canon requires, I did not think it proper to ordain him this Ordination, but shall be ready at any time, that you and the Chapter shall be pleased to desire it, to give him a private Ordination, after your choice of him to be one of your Minor Canons.
I am Revd. Sir, your much obliged friend and brother,
THo. ELIEN.
